Learning Commons at the CBE
Today’s learners cannot imagine life without the internet and supporting technology. The concept of the traditional library is changing to include technology, online tools and spaces for collaboration and exploration.
School Literary Materials Selection
Related to Ministerial Order (#034/2025), Standards for the Selection, Availability, and Access of School Library Materials, CBE has published an administrative regulation AR3051: School Literary Materials Selection. Families and community members can request a review or reconsideration of a literary resource in a school's learning commons by completing the School Library Materials Reconsideration Challenge Request through their local school.
CBE also has an eLibrary online tool available to families, students and staff, which is an online catalogue for all CBE school libraries with detailed information on books, DVD’s and other resources that are available to borrow.
Additionally, parents and legal guardians are welcome to review classroom library collections by contacting your child's school.
Our Learning Commons
At our school, we are committed to making sure that our students have access to the resources they need to support learning when they need them, whether it is a book or periodical, a computer, iPad or camera or “maker supplies”. To support this commitment, our Learning Commons is staffed all day (including before school, nutrition break, lunchtime and after school). Students are able to sign out the resources that they need and there is always someone to answer their questions. Our LC houses our growing Makerspace, which includes rotating design challenges for students, to welcome them to the space and expand their critical thinking skills. Classes and small groups of students can also access the space for project work and special presentations.
Borrowing Rules
Students may have 2 books on loan at a time as well as 2 books on loan for class work. The loan period is 2 weeks. Be sure your books are returned on time and remember no new books will be loaned until all overdue materials are returned. If students would like to use the computers in the LC without a classroom teacher, they are asked to have their ID cards with them. School policy on use of communication devices applies in the Learning Commons. No food or drink is allowed.
