Our school offers complementary courses to suit our students’ unique learning needs, interests and abilities. All of our courses follow the Alberta Programs of Study.
Complementary Course Descriptions
Below is a list of complementary courses that mat potentially be offered across grades 7-9 at Nose Creek School. Some options like Band have fees attached to them. Courses that end up being offered are based on student interest, scheduling, and staffing.
Art (Grade 7) – 1 Credit
In Grade 7 Art, the curricular emphasis is on The Elements of Art, and students will be presenting these through different media, including drawing, painting and sculpting. Projects may include realistic pencil drawing, abstract coloured-pencil drawing, painting from Canadian Art History, and Fantasy Art clay sculpting.
Art (Grade 8) – 1 Credit
In Grade 8 Art, the curricular emphasis is on The Principles of Art and Design, and students will be presenting these through different media, including drawing, painting, and sculpting. Projects may include realistic pencil drawing, abstract coloured-pencil drawing, painting from Impressionism and Expressionism, papier mache, and/or coil hand-building with clay.
Art (Grade 9) – 1 Credit
In Grade 9 Art, the curricular emphasis is working towards having a better understanding of both the Elements of Art and the Principles of Art and Design. Students will communicate their understanding through different media, including drawing, painting, and sculpting. Projects may include realistic pencil drawings, abstract coloured-pencil drawings, painting from Art History, and hand-building Pop Art with clay.

Band (Grades 7, 8, 9) FULL YEAR – 2 Credits
Band is an opportunity for students to become familiar with playing a specific instrument of choice in both a group and individual setting, in addition to learning a variety of musical techniques and music theory. Collaboration and off-campus activities will build relationships in order to perform. Rentals: $100 non- refundable.
Possible future careers: musician, instructor, conductor, composer/songwriter, producer, sound engineer, repair technician, promoter, journalist
CTF Communication Technology (Photography & Film – Grades 7, 8, 9) – 1 Credit
Discover and develop skills related to technologies used to design, construct and relay a message for the purpose of connecting, informing, entertaining or selling products. This course will include photography and film as the technology for communication.
Possible occupations: technical writer, telecommunications technologist, television reporter, instrumentation-engineering technologist, communication technologist, social media or media specialist, photographer, editor, film editor.
CTF Computing Science (Grades 7, 8, 9) – 1 Credit
Students will explore hardware, software and processes to write or create structured algorithms and programs that input, process and output data while learning coding and computational thinking skills. Students will have opportunities to apply their coding skills in various ways, such as developing games, creating animations, designing apps and programming robotics.

CTF Construction (Grades 7, 8, 9) – 1 Credit
Develop skills in the use of tools and materials used in construction processes, and safely transform common wood materials into useful products; learn the various skills of the respective trade. Students will learn about the safety hazards and proper uses of several hand tools, as well as age and ability appropriate power tools. Major projects will focus on exploration of interest and skills in the design process. There will be an extra supply charge for this option. The fee is unknown at this time until approved by the CBE.

Cosmetology (Grades 7, 8 , 9) – 1 Credit
Cosmetology will cover the various skills involved in the hairstyling trade, from haircutting and texturizing to coloring and styling. Topics like hairstyling techniques, hygiene practices, parting, braiding, knotting, and sanitary practices are included.
Possible future careers: cosmetician, hairstylist, barber, wig makers, makeup artist, nail technician, esthetician, salon owner/manager, color specialist, beauty blogger/influencer, film/theatre makeup artist, sales representative
CTF Design Studies/Thinking (Grades 7, 8, 9) – 1 Credit
Learn about the creative process from conception through to development in architecture, industrial design, engineering, interior design and landscaping. In Design Studies, students will learn the fundamentals of three-dimensional objects.
They will learn how to take detailed measurements to replicate a specific item using the 3D Printer. They will then use these skills to create a larger project on the 3D printer that contains multiple pieces. There will be an extra supply charge for this option. Drama (Grades 7, 8, 9) – 1 Credit
Develop acting skills, take risks, learn to observe others and develop your imagination and creativity. Take part in improvisational games, skits, small productions and acting while developing and reinforcing self-confidence.
Possible future careers: actor, director, Playwright, screenwriter, theatre technician, voice actor, producer, stage manager, talent agent
CTF Enterprise and Innovation (Grade 7-9) – 1 Credit
Study the area of business that deals with the organization and management of a project, an undertaking or an innovation. Students will learn how to use the design thinking process and prototyping approach to creatively find solutions to real world problems. Students will potentially work with maker space items, robotics, 3D printers, and more to tackle challenges, both big and small.
Possible future careers: business owner, consultant, business/investment analyst, sustainability/innovation strategist, supply chain/operations manager, e-commerce manager, venture capitalist, life skills coach, consultant.
Environmental Stewardship (Grades 7, 8 , 9) – 1 Credit
Environmental Leadership will dive into the 4 R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover, learning how simple actions can make a big difference. Explore EcoSchools initiatives, and discover how schools can become hubs of sustainability, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship. Uncover the interconnectedness of our actions and their impact on the world around us.
Possible future careers: ecologist, toxicologist, soil scientist, hydrologist, environmental auditor, hazardous waste management technologist, park warden, reclamation specialist.
CTF Fashion Studies (Grades 7, 8, 9) – 1 Credit
Design, manufacture and market clothing and other textile products as well as study the history, sociology and economics of clothing and textile arts. Projects may include knitting, up-cycling, needlework, quilting and design challenges. Students may also have the opportunity to design, create and donate work as well. There will be an extra supply charge for this option. The fee is unknown at this time until approved by the CBE.

Financial Management (Grades 7, 8 , 9) – 1 Credit
Financial Management will explore financing, banking, investing, budgeting, and developing a keen "money sense" to navigate the complexities of personal and professional finance with confidence.
Possible future careers: financial analyst, personal financial advisor, accountant, buyer, treasurer, investment banker, tax associate, financial planner, auditor, risk manager, tax advisor, credit analyst, underwriter, stockbroker, loans officer.
CTF Foods (Grades 7, 8, 9) – 1 Credit
Examine the role of food, looking beyond consumption to production, visual appreciation, nutrition, meal planning, economics and preparation; learn the various skills in the cook trade. In this course, students will learn basic kitchen safety that you can use in your own house or in the culinary industry. A wide variety of recipes will be cooked alongside the knowledge, theory, and research involved. Students will potentially learn about a variety of personal and industrial related concepts such as budgeting and meal planning at home, cooking in the culinary industry, as well as nutrition. There will be an extra supply charge for this option. The fee is unknown at this time until approved by the CBE.
Possible future careers: baker, chef, cook, kitchen helper, food assembler, bartender, flight attendant, restaurant manager, caterer, dietitian, food scientist, blogger/influencer, caterer, critic, inspector, recipe developer.
French (Grades 7, 8, 9) FULL YEAR – 2 Credits
Have you ever wanted to learn a new language? Or continue to develop your conversational French? In this option, students will have the opportunity to learn how to speak, read and write in French in a project based approach focusing on student interest and hands-on activities. No prior experience is necessary.
Possible future careers: translator, interpreter, diplomat, tour guide, aid worker, foreign journalist, flight attendant, cultural advisor, any career requiring French.
Guitar (Grades 7, 8, 9) – 1 Credit
Guitar is an opportunity to develop an understanding of music notation through picking simple melodies and accompanying those melodies with common chord progressions in first position. Students can play independently or in small ensembles. There will be an extra supply/rental charge for this option. The fee is unknown at this time until approved by the CBE.
Possible future careers: musician, songwriter/composer, producer, music arranger, music therapist, critic, sound engineer, retail sales, director, technician, performer
Leadership - Grade 8 (1 Credit) Grade 9 FULL YEAR for (2 credits)
Students will develop their leadership skills and abilities in the classroom, the school, and the larger community. They will work collaboratively with their peers and staff to plan and run a variety of events within the school, take part in various volunteering opportunities, and take the lead on different charitable events at the school. Students wanting to sign up for leadership should consistently display and be willing to develop SPIRIT at school and be a strong role model for others.
Possible future careers: project manager, team leader, executive, human resources/operations manager, training manager, consultant, coach, planner, corporate trainer, event coordinator, executive assistant, personal shopper, healthcare worker, any role that requires leadership.
Power Up Your Learning (Grades 7, 8, 9) – 1 Credit
This course will have a lower number of students to allow the teacher to support students with work. As well, students will learn about proper study habits, organization, time management, prioritization, assignment completion, test taking skills and other life-long skills that can be used in school, work and life.
Tourism (Grades 7, 8 , 9) – 1 Credit
Tourism will delve into the fascinating world of hospitality, promotions, and guest services, and travel. Topics include the tourism sector, including food & beverage, accommodations, travel, attractions, adventure & ecotourism.
Possible future careers: travel agent, tour guide, flight attendant, recreation guide, travel counsellor, pilot, heritage interpreter, museum curator, customs officer, interpreter.
CTF Training for Excellence in Sport (or Recreational Leadership) (Grades 7, 8, 9) – 1 Credit
Recreational Leadership, where you will develop the skills necessary for coaching, fitness leadership, and excelling in sports. Topics covered are: sports performance, sports medicine, injuries, group fitness, and sport psychology. As well we will explore strategies for enhancing athletic performance, preventing injuries, and promoting overall well-being.
Possible future careers: personal trainer, recreation coordinator, sports instructor, coach, athlete, therapist, recreation facility operator, strength/conditioning coach, sport psychologist, sport analyst, nutritionist, physiologist, fitness director, athlete manager, sport scientist, rehabilitation specialist
